  • Difference between a reactor and an actor
    Family and health status : who gains health benefits from being married? Why?
    Families who rate high in conversation orientation rate lower on compliance to health rules etc. Conformity oriented families rate higher.
    What is a proband and why is he/she important to the family?
    Economics and family:
    • 38% of wives earn as much or more than their husbands; what factors are likely to make this easier to adapt to?
    • when husbands lose the breadwinner role, it is hard on husband and wife in different ways. What are those ways?
    Difference between digital natives, digital settlers, and digital immigrants
    Internet issues:
    • Cyberbullying - is it serious?
    • Sexting - is it common? do we care? why/why not?
    Three approaches to improving family communication:
    • personal
    • instructional
    • therapeutic
    Frequently noted communication problems:
    • not taking the other's perspective
    • blaming
    • criticizing

    Virginia Satir's characteristics of nurturing families:

    • self-worth is high
    • communication is direct, clear specific, and honest
    • rules are flexible, appropriate, and subject to change
    • linking to society is open and hopeful
